CAUTION: Please do not turn off the camera or remove the SD card while updating the camera's firmware. It may cause serious damage to the camera. If the camera is malfunctioning after the firmware update, please contact your dealer or service center. Firmware Update STEP 1: Check the current firmware version. - Mount the lens onto the camera body and then insert the SD memory card or the SDHC memory card.
- Set the camera's power switch to ON.
- Press the playback button to set the camera to playback mode.
- Press the button , while holding down the [FUNC.2] button.
The screen shows DMC-L1: 1.1-----Camera body Firmware version Lens:1.0------------Lens Firmware version - Set the power switch to OFF, after checking this.
If the firmware version is not displayed on the LCD using the following procedure or the firmware version indicated is older than the version being offered, please update firmware. STEP 2. Download the updated version of the firmware in these procedures, download the file and self-extract it. For Windows - Make a temporary folder on your PC for downloading the file,e.g. C:/Temp.
- Download and save the firmware in the folder you made in the above step.
 L1V11.exe/1,461,822. Bytes - Double click the downloaded file. You may see a message after double-clicking the downloaded file. Please ignore it and click YES to proceed.
- The self-extracted file L1V11.bin will appear. The file size should be 4,665,412 Bytes. If the file size is not the same, please download and double click the file again. The file size can be checked by right-clicking on the file and selecting properties.
For Macintosh - Make a temporary folder on your PC for downloading the file.
- Download and save the firmware in the folder you made in the above step.
 L1V11.zip/1,461,822. Bytes - Extract downloaded file. The file may automatically be extracted depending on your computer's setting. If your OS is older than Mac OS X 1.02, please use Extract software. If your Macintosh OS is newer than Mac OS X 1.03, double-click the file, L1V11.zip.
- The extracted file L1_110.bin should be 4,665,412 bytes, if the file size not the same, please download and double click the file again. The file size can be checked by File in Finder, then See information.
STEP 3. Copy the firmware file onto an SD card. Preparation of the SD card 8MB or more must be free on the SD card. Please use an SD card which has already been formatted for the DMC-L1K. Please refer to the SD card formatting information, How to format an SD card. Copying the downloaded file onto the SD card - Connect your PC and DMC-L1K with the USB cable and set the camera to PC mode by selecting Menu.
- Press the Menu button to enter USB mode.
- Press the Up button and then press Menu again.
 - Copy the file into the Root directory (The first or top-most directory in the hierarchy) of the SD card.
- When copying is finished, unplug the USB cable.
- Turn off the camera by pressing the power switch.
Files can be directly copied from the PC by using an SD card reader/writer devices with the USB port. The SD card still has to be formatted by the DMC-L1K prior to use. When formatting the SD card, all data, including protected data, will be erased and can not be recovered. Please make sure not to lose your important data. STEP 4. Installing the firmware update. - Make sure to turn off the power switch.
- Connect the AC adaptor's power cord to a wall outlet.
- Using the DC cable, connect the DC output on the adaptor with the DC input terminal on the DMC-L1K.
- Insert the SD card readied in STEP 3 into the DMC-L1K.
- Turn on the power switch.
- Press the Play button to enter the Play mode.
- The following display will be shown on the LCD (Fig. 1). Please wait after the message is displayed.
Fig. 1 The initial setup of the firmware updating process Version number varies according to the updated firmware used. - If a newer version than the updated firmware downloaded is already installed in the DMC-L1K, the firmware update process will not start and the DMC-L1K will display that no update file is found. Please turn off your camera and use the camera as is. The SD card has to be formatted again before using the camera for the first time. It is important that the firmware file is removed from the SD card prior to use or you may experience problems with the camera.
- Press the Up button to select Yes. The update process will start (Fig. 2).

The DMC-L1K will start the update process. The firmware update will take about 2 to 3 minutes. Please do not attempt the following operations before completion.
- Turning the power off and on
- Opening the SD card compartment
- Removing the SD card
- Removing the lens
- Removing the AC adaptor cord
- Removing the DC cable
The green bar increases the level by the process. - Once the firmware update process is completed, the DMC-L1K will turn off the power and turn on again automatically.
- To verify the version number, follow Step1 at the beginning. If the camera body version number indicates 1.1, the process is completed.
- Turn off the power switch.
- Remove the SD card.
- The SD card has to be formatted again before using the camera for the first time. It is important that the firmware file is removed from the SD card prior to use or you may experience problems with the camera.
