  1. What's the difference between DVD-R and DVD-RW?
Although DVD-RW technology does allow for disc rewriting, DVD-R technology (found in our DVD Recorders) offers better compatibility with DVD home players. Our recorders also use DVD-RAM technology, which brings you reusable media through a tried-and-tested technology now in use with many PCs. A DVD-RAM disc can be reused up to 100,000 times100 times greater than DVD-RWs.
2. Can I record from a commercially purchased video cassette or DVD?
No. Since duplicating copyrighted material is illegal, most commercially sold video cassettes and DVDs are encoded with copy encryption, so they cannot be recorded by our recorders.
3. Can my DVD Recorder record to CD-R/RW format discs?
Although it can play CD-R/RW discs, including MP3 files, it cannot record to them. Our DVD Recorders can record to DVD-R discs, DVD-RAM discs, and to the built-in hard drive (select models).
4. Can I change recording speed during recording?
No. However, you can use the Flexible Recording (FR) format when you use the timer mode to record. Once the timer has been programmed with the duration of the intended recording, the recorder will calculate which speed to use to fit the entire duration of your recording.
5. My recorder offers four recording speeds. Apart from allowing longer recording, what do these do? Will different speeds affect the quality of the recording?
The four speeds are associated with four different levels of data transfer. As the recording time increases, the data transfer rate decreases and the quality will decrease. However, even using the longest recording time, the quality will be similar to VHS or often better, depending on the material you are recording.
6. Can my Panasonic DVD Recorder record portions of a camcorder video as sections (chapters) so that I can later navigate to the desired section?
Absolutely. When dubbing a camcorder video onto DVD, the DVD Recorder will create a chapter on the DVD for each time you pressed "stop" in the original camcorder recording. You can then label each segment using the recorder's title feature, which also allows you to create a title for the DVD itself. However, this must be done BEFORE you finalize the disc. Later, you can access each chapter using the "menu" button on the DVD playerjust like you do with your favorite DVD movies.
7. Why does the length of the finalizing disc process vary so much?
The amount of time it takes to finalize a disc depends on how much you have recorded on it. Since the purpose of finalizing a disc is to cancel allunused recording time left on the disc, the more you have recorded, the less time will be needed to finalize the disc.
8. DVD-RAM discs are sold with and without the cartridge. Which type can I use with my Panasonic DVD Recorder?
Both types can be used. The only difference is that the cartridge provides added protection for the DVD-RAM disc from accidental scratching or damage.
9. Will the Simultaneous Record & Play and Time Slip Playback features work with DVD-RAM and DVD-R discs or the built-in hard drive (if recorder has one)?
These features can only be used with DVD-RAM discs and the built-in hard disk. They cannot be used with DVD-R discs.
10. I own a Panasonic DVD camcorder, which uses a smaller-sized DVD-RAM disc. Will it play on my DVD Recorder?
Yes. The recorder will play smaller DVDs without any problems.
11. How many times can a DVD-RAM disc be used?
We estimate that 100,000 times should not be a problem. In comparison, DVD-RW discs can be reused about 1,000 times.
12. Can I record over previous material on a DVD-RAM disc?
Yes, DVD-RAM discs can be reused. Unwanted material must first be deleted, much the same as you would delete a file from a PC disk.
13. Can I use a DVD-RAM disc in my DVD Recorder that had previously been used in a PC?
Yes, but because the format is different, you have to reformat the disc. The same is also true with the reverse scenario.
  1. Why does my DVD Recorder go into Auto Set every time I turn it on?

Answer Those DVD Recorders that do not include the TV Guide On ScreenTM system will automatically try to program in all your available channels the first time the unit is activated. If that procedure is not allowed to finish, the unit will go into the auto scan mode each time the unit is powered on. There are two solutions:
 1. If the unit is installed where no TV signal is available, manually add a channel to stop auto set.
2. Allow the unit to complete the auto channel setup.
2. How do I connect the recorder to my old television that does not have audio/video inputs?
Model other than DMR-ES30V/ES40V Purchasing an RF modulator can make the connection. An RF modulator is a device that converts the separate audio and video signals to an RF signal (Channel 3 or Channel 4). These are inexpensive and can be purchased from electronic shops. In the event that your television doesn't offer separate Audio / Video inputs, the DVD Recorder you're using needs t |
