7. What is DIGA?

General
1. What's the difference between DVD-R and DVD-RW?

Although DVD-RW technology does allow for disc rewriting, DVD-R technology (found in our DVD Recorders) offers better compatibility with DVD home players. Our recorders also use DVD-RAM technology, which brings you reusable media through a tried-and-tested technology now in use with many PCs. A DVD-RAM disc can be reused up to 100,000 times—100 times greater than DVD-RWs.

2. Can I record from a commercially purchased video cassette or DVD?

No. Since duplicating copyrighted material is illegal, most commercially sold video cassettes and DVDs are encoded with copy encryption, so they cannot be recorded by our recorders.

3. Can my DVD Recorder record to CD-R/RW format discs?

Although it can play CD-R/RW discs, including MP3 files, it cannot record to them. Our DVD Recorders can record to DVD-R discs, DVD-RAM discs, and to the built-in hard drive (select models).

4. Can I change recording speed during recording?

No. However, you can use the Flexible Recording (FR) format when you use the timer mode to record. Once the timer has been programmed with the duration of the intended recording, the recorder will calculate which speed to use to fit the entire duration of your recording.

5. My recorder offers four recording speeds. Apart from allowing longer recording, what do these do? Will different speeds affect the quality of the recording?

The four speeds are associated with four different levels of data transfer. As the recording time increases, the data transfer rate decreases and the quality will decrease. However, even using the longest recording time, the quality will be similar to VHS or often better, depending on the material you are recording.

6. Can my Panasonic DVD Recorder record portions of a camcorder video as sections (chapters) so that I can later navigate to the desired section?

Absolutely. When dubbing a camcorder video onto DVD, the DVD Recorder will create a chapter on the DVD for each time you pressed "stop" in the original camcorder recording. You can then label each segment using the recorder's title feature, which also allows you to create a title for the DVD itself. However, this must be done BEFORE you finalize the disc. Later, you can access each chapter using the "menu" button on the DVD player—just like you do with your favorite DVD movies.

7. Why does the length of the finalizing disc process vary so much?

The amount of time it takes to finalize a disc depends on how
much you have recorded on it. Since the purpose of finalizing
a disc is to cancel all unused recording time left on the disc, the
more you have recorded, the less time will be needed to finalize the disc.

8. DVD-RAM discs are sold with and without the cartridge. Which type can I use with my Panasonic DVD Recorder?

Both types can be used. The only difference is that the cartridge provides added protection for the DVD-RAM disc from accidental scratching or damage.

9. Will the Simultaneous Record & Play and Time Slip Playback features work with DVD-RAM and DVD-R discs or the built-in hard drive (if recorder has one)?

These features can only be used with DVD-RAM discs and the built-in hard disk. They cannot be used with DVD-R discs.

10. I own a Panasonic DVD camcorder, which uses a smaller-sized DVD-RAM disc. Will it play on my DVD Recorder?

Yes. The recorder will play smaller DVDs without any problems.

11. How many times can a DVD-RAM disc be used?

We estimate that 100,000 times should not be a problem. In comparison, DVD-RW discs can be reused about 1,000 times.

12. Can I record over previous material on a DVD-RAM disc?

Yes, DVD-RAM discs can be reused. Unwanted material must first be deleted, much the same as you would delete a file from a PC disk.

13. Can I use a DVD-RAM disc in my DVD Recorder that had previously been used in a PC?

Yes, but because the format is different, you have to reformat the disc. The same is also true with the reverse scenario.

Adding Channels Automatically

Select your model:

Answer
Those DVD Recorders that do not include the TV Guide
On ScreenTM system will automatically try to program in all your available channels the first time the unit is activated.
If that procedure is not allowed to finish, the unit will go into the auto scan mode each time the unit is powered on.
There are two solutions:

1. If the unit is installed where no TV signal is available, manually add a channel to stop auto set.
Remote control GUI

2. Allow the unit to complete the auto channel setup.

2. How do I connect the recorder to my old television that does not have audio/video inputs?

Model other than DMR-ES30V/ES40V

Purchasing an RF modulator can make the connection.
An RF modulator is a device that converts the separate audio and video signals to an RF signal (Channel 3 or Channel 4).
These are inexpensive and can be purchased from electronic shops.

In the event that your television doesn't offer separate
Audio / Video inputs, the DVD Recorder you're using needs to be connected to the television via the antenna input.
Some of Panasonic's DVD Recorders now offer a built-in RF modulator which allows a direct connection to the antenna input on your television.
Before purchasing an RF modulator, please do this test.

  • Connect your CATV cable / rooftop antenna to the RF IN connection. Connect a short cable to the television output
    (Out to television) connection.
  • Insert a DVD movie and press "play"
  • Try watching both Channel 3 and Channel 4.
  • If you are able to see the movie playing, an RF modulator isn't needed.
  • If you are unable to see the movie, the model DVD recorder you are using doesn't include the built-in RF modulator.
In this case you need to purchase one.

Check and confirm the following items listed below and make necessary measures.

(If your unit is a model other than DMR-ES30V/ES40V, please check 1 and 2. If your unit is model DMR-ES30V/ES40V, please check 3.)

1) Is the audio/video cable connected with this unit properly?

* If your television does not have audio/video terminals, an RF modulator is necessary. Please refer to "Q2. How do I connect the recorder to my old television that does not have audio/video inputs?"

unit unit

2) Is the appropriate video input for television selected to suit the connections to this unit?

* Select input with your television's remote control.
The button could be labeled "TV/Video", "Input", or something similar.

Remote control

* If your television's remote control is missing or out of order, it might be possible to use the remote controller for the unit to select video input.

You can configure the remote control television operation buttons to turn the television on/off, change the television input mode, select the television channel, and change the television volume for some TV manufacturers.

Remote control GUI

(Please refer to the owner's manual for details)
The following is a list of manufacturers that our remote controllers support: Panasonic, National, Quasar, Philips, RCA, Samsung, Fisher, Sanyo, GE, Sharp, Goldstar, Sony, Hitachi, Sylvania, JVC, Thomson, LG, Toshiba, Magnavox, Zenith, Mitsubishi.

3) In case you are using DMR-ES30V or DMR-ES40V:
VHS tape playback output signal is available only from "DVD/VHS COMMON" output terminals (yellow color).
"DVD" output terminals (yellow color) don't supply VHS tape playback output signal.
Therefore, it is necessary to make sure the connection is properly made with "DVD/VHS COMMON" or "DVD" to suit your use.

5. I have an elaborate home theater system. I've reviewed the diagrams Panasonic provides, but I don't see one that illustrates my system. Should I assume that this DVD Recorder wouldn't be compatible?

Absolutely not. We've included connection diagrams for the most common ways the unit will be installed. The Panasonic Customer Call Center will be happy to assist you. You may contact them at 1-800-211-PANA (7262).

Recording
1. What type of media will play in this recorder?

Initially Panasonic's DVD recorders used two types of media: DVD-R and DVD-RAM. Our most recent models expanded the choices to include DVD+R as well as DVD-RW and DVD+RW. There are some limitations, so please review your Owner's Manual.

2. Why won't my recorded disc play in other machines?

  Watch a Video Tutorial

Finalizing the DVD So You Can Play it on Other Equipment

Answer
To create a disc that's compatible with other DVD players, it must be "finalized." This process adds certain files that are needed for the disc to be recognized as the equivalent of a DVD movie. Finalizing the disc will prevent you from recording any new material to that disc, so be sure to finish creating the disc before finalizing it.

It is not necessary to finalize the discs when a DVD-R, DVD-RW, or +R disc is recorded and played with the same DVD recorder.

4. On Internet discussion forums, I'm seeing many comments that certain brands of DVD media appear to be more reliable than others. Aside from Panasonic, what brands of DVD media does Panasonic recommend?

DVD media are actually made by three to four major manufacturers. These manufacturers sell to all the known name brands. Buying one brand doesn't actually mean you are buying media made by that company. In fact, it's quite possible that different lots of the same branded media will be manufactured by more than one company. In most cases, difficulties you may experience with DVD media can be traced to a few causes. These include scratches, warping, or finger prints on the surface. Panasonic also provides firmware updates via its web site that increase the reliability of newer / faster DVD media that's been released after your unit was manufactured.

In most cases, this update will fix the problem.
Try to update with the latest version.
to the firmware update site

NOTE:
This site only provides updated firmware for U.S. models.
Do not attempt to load these versions into non U.S. models as serious damage may result.

Updated firmware is offered to correct specific problems.
These problems may not affect all units.
In general, if your unit is working OK, there is no need to update the firmware.

5. Premium channels broadcast my favorite programs in HD with 5.1 surround sound. Why doesn't my DVD recorder record them in these formats?

HD broadcasts and 5.1 surround sound require special equipment to receive the enhanced signal. The tuner in your DVD recorder is very similar to that in your TV. Any broadcast you receive will be recorded in the standard broadcast format.

6. Why won't the tray of my recorder open (the disc will not come out)?

If a disc is in the DVD recorder and can't be removed in the normal manner, please try the following:

If in "standby mode" ([Timer Mark] and [EXT Link] are on), with a recording scheduled, press the [EXT Link] button.

If it is not possible to take out the disc by the above procedures in other conditions than mentioned above, follow the steps shown below.

1. Press and keep [POWER] button on the unit for more than 10 seconds to power off.

unit unit

2. Unplug power cord and wait for approximately 1 minute.

3. Plug in power cord again.
The unit's display will show [SELF CHECK] or [RECOVER] and the unit goes into recovery mode. When the above message goes off, it can be used.

7. Why does recording stop before completion?

When recording on disc fails for some reason, i.e. power failure occurs, power plug is accidentally disconnected, recording shall stop. In those cases, check and confirm items listed below and take necessary measures.

a) When the disc has dirt or fingerprints on it, or scratches, or a label on it...
a-1) Clean up the disc if it is dirty.
a-2) Use another disc if it is scratched. (Use of Panasonic discs is recommended)
a-3) If there is a label, remove it.

b) When recording on DVD disc...
b-1) The disc may be faulty.
Check with the disc manufacturer.
(Use of Panasonic discs is recommended)

c) In case of repeating more than approximately 50 times of taking In/Out of disc, or Power On/Off (*1)...
c-1) It may become unable to record or edit on the disc.
In such a case, it is recommended that you change the disc.
(*1) This item is effective only when using discs except DVD-RAM.

d) In case the display shows [SELF CHECK] or [RECOVER]...
d-1) Since it is under recovery from power failure and unplugged conditions, wait until the message on the display disappears.

8. Why am I unable to erase a recorded program?

It is not possible to erase programs: a) while recording and dubbing, b) the erasure protection is set on the program while recording and dubbing, and c) the erasure protection (disc protection) is set on the disc.

Check and confirm the following items listed below and make the necessary adjustments.
1) In process of recording or dubbing...
Wait until the process finishes, then erase the program.

2) When the erasure protection is set on the program, reset the erasure protection of the program.

2. I purchased a Panasonic DVD Recorder to make copies of movies I've purchased. My children may accidentally damage the original disc and I'd like to have a backup copy. Why am I unable to copy the disc?

Copyright law prohibits copyrighted movies from being copied, even for personal archival use. Panasonic's DVD Recorders are designed to respect intellectual property and abide by such laws. Copies cannot be made. Pre-recorded video tapes and DVD discs sold commercially are not able to be copied.

TV Guide
1. I'm seeing a "No Program Data Available" message. What might be causing this?

1) Data are only downloaded while the unit is in standby mode. Did you leave the unit turned on? To receive your channel lineup and program listings, you need to set your recorder to standby mode by turning it off using the power button on the remote or on the recorder itself (DO NOT unplug the unit or turn off the power strip that it's plugged into) when it is not being used.

2) During the TV Guide On Screen setup procedure, did you accurately select the choices that describe the way you receive your television programming, e.g., cable, cable box, or antenna setup?

3) Did you enter the correct ZIP code?

4) If you live in an area that has recently been assigned a new zip code, it's possible that it's not yet included in the TV Guide database. Please contact our Call Center for assistance — 1-800-211-PANA (7262)

5) During the first 24 hours, did you experience a power outage?

6) Is your television programming delivered via satellite TV? The TV Guide On Screen listings are only available through cable television and off-air reception using a rooftop antenna.

7) If you subscribe to cable television and are required to use a cable box, please check that the IR blaster (wire from your recorder that, when placed in front of the IR remote sensor on your cable box, is able to change the channels) is positioned properly and that it is operating correctly.

2. I've completed the installation, waited the recommended 24 hours, and I'm now asked to select the proper "channel lineup." What is a "channel lineup" and what should I do when the choices it offers don't match my cable system?

A channel lineup is the listing of which stations are assigned to which channels on your cable television system. Your cable system periodically shares their channel assignments with TV Guide On Screen. If changes were recently made, or if they were made without updating TV Guide On Screen, it's possible that the choices may not match your channel lineup. In such situations, you'll have to manually create the channel lineup using the CHANNEL EDITOR feature, which is explained in the "Utilizing the TV Guide On Screen System" Section of the owner's manual.

3. How do I know which stations are assigned to each channel on my cable system?

Most cable television companies provide their subscribers with a list. You might also find this information in your local newspaper, television listing periodical, or on your cable television company's web site.

4. Why do the channels keep changing when I'm trying to watch television?

Most likely you receive your television programming via cable television and your company requires you to use a cable box. You're probably trying to watch television without using the DVD Recorder. When the recorder is turned off, it takes control of your cable box to gather program data. You need to use the DVD Recorder as your cable box. Once you turn the DVD Recorder on, the channel surfing will stop.

5. Why is the program information incomplete when I turn on the DVD Recorder?

Since program data can only be downloaded while the unit is in the standby mode, it's likely that you did not put the unit in standby mode after last using it. You can do this by pressing the power button either on the front panel of the recorder or on the remote to power down the recorder (again, DO NOT unplug the unit or turn off the power strip that it's plugged into). You'll know you are in standby mode because the time of day will still be displayed on the front of the recorder.

6. I've noticed that some channels carried by my cable company are not listed. Did I do something wrong? Can they be added?

The TV Guide On Screen™ system selects the channels they include based on market popularity and local viewing area statistics. Such statistics are constantly reviewed so it's possible that the number of channels carried in your area will increase. At this time, you cannot manually add channels so that program data will be included.

7. I use satellite TV. Why doesn't the TV Guide feature of my Panasonic DVD Recorder seem to work?

Currently, satellite-delivered television programming does not carry the TV Guide data.

8. I'm not able to receive the TV Guide channel listings on my Panasonic DVD Recorder. What's causing this problem?

1) Following the initial setup and installation, the unit was not placed in standby mode for 24 hours to do the initial data download.

2) When the unit is not in use, it should be placed in standby mode. Not doing so will not allow the data to be downloaded daily.

3) The unit is connected to a home satellite system.
Currently, satellite-delivered television programming does not carry the TV Guide data.

4) Some cable TV companies are in transition from an analog to a digital system. During the transition, TV Guide data may have a chance of being temporarily turned off.

5) If your installation uses a cable box (set top box), the power to the cable box must be continuously left on. If the box is turned off, TV Guide data can't be downloaded.

9. From time to time I'm seeing gaps of missing channel data in the TV Guide listings. What's causing that?

Each time your unit is turned off, placing it in standby mode, TV Guide data is received. This data updates the daily listings. If the unit were used constantly, in excess of 24 hours, or was not placed into the standby mode while not in use, the data download would not occur, causing the gaps in the program listings.

10. I live in a rural area and receive my TV programming using a rooftop antenna. In this area we only have two TV stations. I've verified that TV Guide's program data is not available. Can I use the TV Guide feature?

Unfortunately, the TV Guide On Screen™ system requires your DVD Recorder to have access to this data.
TV Guide / Gemstar's distribution network provides this data to an extensive distribution network.
Unfortunately, living in an extremely rural area can present the situation where their data is not available.
These situations are extremely rare, but they can exist.

2. Why does my unit display 'U99,' and why has it stopped working?

The "U99" error code signifies a "general communications failure".
It is not associated with one specific problem.
It can be related to the version of firmware your DVD recorder is currently using and it has been associated with the TV Guide On Screen™ guide.

If your unit displays U99, turn the power off, unplug the
unit for 5 minutes, and reconnect the power.

If U99 reoccurs, please contact
the Global Service Center Network for assistance.

3. Occasionally, while I'm trying to watch TV, the cable box starts changing channels by itself. What's causing this?

Models include the TV Guide On Screen™ system

When the DVD recorder is placed in standby mode, it communicates with your cable box via the IR blaster.
During this time, it searches channels to download TV Guide data.

Such situations occur when the customer is attempting to watch TV by connecting their TV directly to the cable box, thus bypassing the DVD recorder. While watching any TV, the DVD recorder should be on and channel selection is made through the DVD recorder.

4. Sometimes, on the models of DMR-E50/DMR-E80H and former models, the word "RECOVER" is displayed, and on newer models the word "SELF CHECK" is displayed on the front panel when I turn the unit on. What do these indicate?

"RECOVER" is displayed when the DVD Recorder was previously turned off by any means other than using the power switch.
Such situations might include a power outage or turning off the power using a power strip that supplies power to your home entertainment system.
"SELF CHECK" indicates the same situation as "RECOVER". (SELF CHECK = RECOVER)

It's strongly recommended that you use the power switch on the DVD Recorder to turn the unit on or off.
Furthermore, when not in use, the power should not be disconnected.

If [RECOVER] or [SELF CHECK] is indicated under recovery from power failure and unplugging conditions, wait until the message on the display disappears. If not recovery does not occur, follow the procedures listed below.

1) Press and keep [POWER] button on the unit for more than 10 seconds to turn off the power of the unit.

2) Unplug power cord and wait for approximately 1 minute.

3) Plug power cord in.

4) The display shows [RECOVER] or [SELF CHECK] and goes into recovery mode. Wait until the message on the display disappears.

unit unit

*When the unit does not recover after following the steps above (1 to 4), the unit needs to be checked and repaired.
Ask the shop where it was purchased or contact the
Global Service Center Network for further consultation.

Note: Please see "Why does recording stop before completion?" for further information on [RECOVER] and [SELF CHECK].

5. I live in a rural area where frequent power outages during storms are common. I've always unplugged my electronic equipment during storms or when we will be away for extended periods of time. My dealer told me that I should not unplug my DVD Recorder. Is this true?

When not in use, your DVD Recorder is in a standby mode.
In this mode, the TV Guide data is being downloaded.
Disconnecting power from your unit will prevent the daily listing
from being updated, causing gaps of missing data in the listing.

6. Why won't my remote controller work?

Check and confirm the following items:

1) Is the unit in stand-by mode for timer recording?

unit unit

2) Is the remote sensor on the unit receiving strong rays such as direct sunshine or light from an inverter fluorescent lamp?

3) If the unit won't work at all by any buttons on the remote controller, the batteries might be worn out.

Replace the batteries in the remote controller with new ones.

4) Is there anything to block up for remote between remote controller and the unit?

5) When the television is able to be powered On/Off with the remote controller, but it won't operate any other functions of the unit, (Display shows [U12] or [U30]), it is necessary to match up the remote mode of the unit and that of the remote controller. (e.g., remote 2, and so on).
For further details, refer to the owner's manual.

7. What is DIGA?

DIGA is Panasonic's nickname for our DVD Recorders. You may hear the word in our multimedia instructions. "DIGA" stands for "your Panasonic DVD Recorder" in the instructional movies.
