DENALI MEDIA HOLDINGS MAKES ALASKA-SIZED PURCHASE OF
PANASONIC AG-HPX600 P2 HD SHOULDER-MOUNTS AND
AK-HC1500G HD CAMERAS FOR ANCHORAGE CBS AFFILIATE
LAS VEGAS, NV (April 7, 2013) – Denali Media Holdings (Anchorage, AK), a subsidiary of General Communication, Inc. (GCI), recently purchased 17 Panasonic AG-HPX600 P2 HD shoulder-mount camcorders for ENG and eight AK-HC1500G HD camera for in-studio use at the Anchorage CBS affiliate. Denali also bought four AG-HPX250 P2 HD handheld camcorders with AVC-Intra recording.
Earlier this year, Denali announced that it has agreed to the purchase of three Alaska broadcast stations: CBS affiliate KTVA in Anchorage, and NBC affiliates KATH in Juneau and KSCT of Sitka.* The HPX600s, with native 10-bit 4:2:2 AVC-Intra recording and at 6.2 pounds the industry’s lightest shoulder-mounts, will be assigned to ENG and field production, and the HC1500Gs will be utilized in the Anchorage primary studio and smaller newsroom set. The HPX250s are targeted for multi-media journalists and staff producing exclusive web content.
Implementation of all the new Panasonic gear is slated for fall 2013. It is anticipated that the Anchorage station will produce news feeds and have satellite crews in place for Juneau and Sitka, and will also produce sports programming for GCI’s Cable Television’s channel 1.
“We chose the HPX600s after a thorough shoot-out with competitive camcorders,” said David DeGraffenreid, Operations Manager for Denali Media. “The HPX600s excelled in low-light, rendering and overall feature set and workflow. The camcorders are codec friendly, with both AVC-Intra and DVCPRO HD: our initial plans are to shoot news in DVCPRO HD and long-format work in AVC-Intra.”
DeGraffenreid added that the HC1500Gs were chosen on the basic of quality and cost-effectiveness, and that the 5.5-pound handheld HPX250s were a natural fit for web production.
“We really like the HPX600’s options for wireless metadata input and proxy recording: being able to watch live feeds of proxies and metadata is terrific,” he continued, “And I can’t overstate the benefits of the camcorder’s light weight and low light performance in our rugged, expansive market.”
