PANASONIC ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF THE 2013 KID WITNESS NEWS VIDEO COMPETITION
SECAUCUS, NJ (May 13, 2013) – Panasonic, a leader in high definition technology solutions, announced Brooklyn, New York’s PS/IS 41-Walter F. White School as the grand prize winner of the 24th annual Panasonic Kid Witness News (KWN) video competition. Competing with 72 schools across the U.S., the PS 41 team was honored with the 2013 Best Video of the Year Award for their creative video, “Put Down the Gun”, about gun violence in Brownsville and why it needs to end. The PS 41 winning team will receive a chance to represent the U.S. in the KWN Global Competition which will be held in December.
To claim their title as 2013 Best Video of the Year, the PS 41 student team visited the headquarters of Panasonic Corporation of North America last week to participate in the New Vision & Eco-Effect Awards ceremony along with fellow New Vision award finalists from Maui High School (Maui, HI), Maynard Holbrook Jackson High School (Atlanta, GA) and Val Verde High School (Perris, CA). In March, Panasonic honored Marcus Garvey School (Chicago, IL) Best Eco-Effect PSA of the Year Award, which the school accepted at the ceremony.
“We’ve had the opportunity to participate in the U.S. KWN competition for twenty-four years,” said Jeff Goldstein, teacher and KWN coordinator of PS/IS 41-Walter F. White School. “We are honored to take home the 2013 Best Video of the Year for the first time ever in this program.”
The theme of this year’s competition entitled, “The World through Their Eyes” allowed students to share stories from their unique point of view. Each of the top four winning schools were honored with a New Vision Award for their innovative videos on social issues and the winner of the 2013 Best Eco Effect PSA of the Year was awarded for its video, “The Okra Show” on environmental issues. As part of its continuing efforts to achieve sustainability, Panasonic introduced The Best Eco Effect PSA of the Year Award, this year in the competition.
All winners completed the preliminary competition in which a team of students and faculty from Bronx Community College’s Film Division judged and selected the top 10 videos from each category. These videos were then submitted to a panel of professionals in the film and broadcast industries who selected the top winning videos.
“Panasonic has made sustainability and protecting the environment a theme in our Kid Witness News Program this year,” said Joseph M. Taylor, Chairman and CEO, Panasonic Corporation of North America. “So you have all had some time to think about it. I hope that you will continue to keep the importance of sustainability in mind well beyond this program. In fact, I hope you will make it a key part of your lives.”
Finalists in the U.S. KWN video competition receive a Panasonic Kid Witness News New Vision and Eco-Effect Award trophy, a banner to prominently hang in their school and a “Winners’ Weekend”, which includes an expense-paid trip to the Greater New York City/New Jersey area for the awards ceremony and sightseeing activities in the Big Apple.
Panasonic Kid Witness News is a unique, hands-on video education program for grades 4-12, designed to encourage students to develop valuable cognitive, communication and organization skills through video production. The program began in 1989 and since has grown immensely. This year, 622 schools from 29 countries around the world have participated in the KWN program. In the program, Panasonic provides students with an array of the latest digital video equipment and opportunity to share how they view the world around them. Under faculty supervision, students create, produce, direct, act in, and edit a variety of videos that exhibit subjects they experience in school and their everyday lives.
