1. What is the Panasonic ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder?
The Panasonic ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder is a VCR-sized box that sits on or near a television and magically records and stores your favorite television shows, sporting events, and other TV programs on a hard drive, so you can watch them when you want, and not when they are broadcasted. It's TV on demand.

2. How does the Panasonic ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder differ from a VCR?
One of the biggest differences is that the ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder is meant for short-term storage and does not use videotape for archiving, but can be used in conjunction with your VCR for long-term storage. The ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder's digital storage technology provides exceptional picture quality and allows you to control live TV.

3. How much does the ReplayTV service cost with the Panasonic ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder?
The basic ReplayTV Service is absolutely free of any charges, but telephone charges may apply in certain select areas.

4. What is the advantage of the Panasonic ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder over TiVo and DISHPlayer?
With the Panasonic ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder you pay no monthly fees (telephone charges may apply in certain select areas). It's easy to use and it customizes TV on your terms. The Panasonic ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder combines daily programming information for your existing antenna, cable, cable box, and satellite receiver in the Channel Guide, making it the most versatile personal television ever.

5. How many shows can the ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder store in its digital storage space?
There are three models of the Panasonic ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder (PV-HS1000, PV-HS2000, & PV-HS3000) consisting of 20 hours, 30 hours, and 60 hours of hard disk space (in extended record mode). It is not designed to be a long-term storage device and constantly recycles storage space as new shows are recorded. It does give you the option to preserve a show and make sure it isn't replaced by the next recording. If you record something you want to save, you can easily save it to videotape.

6. How does the ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder update the Channel Guide information?
Every ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder has a built-in modem that connects to a telephone line (telephone charges may apply in certain select areas). Every night, the ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder dials into a secure server and downloads the latest channel guide information.

7. Will the ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder work without the phone connection?
Yes. However, you won't be able to take full advantage of the ReplayTV services which include the updated Channel Guide information, replay zones, and customized theme/show-based recording features.

8. Is the phone call toll-free?
When you set up ReplayTV you choose from phone numbers selected based on your area and zip codes. Your phone company can determine which ones are local for you. Note: In select areas, a toll call may be necessary.

9. Can the ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder edit out commercials?
No. The ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder records entire programs, including commercials. However, you can use QuickSkip to advance forward 30 seconds when watching a recorded or delayed version of a live show.

10. What is the Show Extender feature?
Show Extender lets you "pad" the beginning and/or end of a particular program with extra time, so you never miss a minute! You can use the show extender feature to record extra time in single-minute intervals, for up to four hours.

11. What is Manual Record?
Manual record is a VCR-style setup that lets you record any channel for any length of time that you want — as far out as the year 2100! To access this feature press the menu button on the remote. Select manual record and single record. You will then be asked to set the recording date, start time and end time.

12. What is a Replay Channel?
Replay channels are personalized channels from ReplayTV Service that can be created on the ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder. They are listed in a separate guide called the replay guide, where on-demand personalized channels, Zone-based channels, and theme-based channels are listed so you can access what you've recorded on demand. To watch one of the recorded programs, simply choose the Replay channel from the Channel Guide and press PLAY on the remote.

13. What is a Show-Based Replay Channel?
A Show-based Replay channel searches for episodes of a favorite TV show, such as your favorite sitcom or news program. To create a one-time, Show-based record, highlight the show in the Channel Guide and press RECORD. You can also tell the ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder to record every episode of your favorite sitcom each week, by pressing RECORD while you're watching it. A menu will pop up and you can choose to "Record Just This Episode or Record All Episodes". You can tell the ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder to keep up to seven episodes. That means that when the eighth episode is recorded, it will record over the first episode. That's all there is to it.

14. What is a ReplayZone?
ReplayZones are category listings offered by ReplayTV Service that make it easy to find great TV shows. Whether you're into movies, sitcoms, sports, cartoons, or just about any other TV category you'll find it in ReplayZones. In the ReplayZones, you can also set up channels for any show you find or for an entire category. You can create college football, science fiction, or even a talk show channel. The Zones change every day, so check them often for the best new programming.

15. What is a Theme-Based Replay Channel?
This is the feature used to create personalized themes within ReplayZones. A Theme-based Replay channel searches for shows that fit any theme you choose, such as actors, movie directors, hobbies, or sports teams. The ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder is smart enough to search the Channel Guide and record shows based on your search criteria. This creates a Replay channel. For instance, if you tell the ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder to record Sci-Fi movies, it will create a Sci-Fi Replay channel and record a new Sci-Fi move every time one is broadcast.

16. Can the ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder find shows?
Yes. With the Find Shows feature, you can enter any keyword that interests you, like golf, Star Trek or your favorite actor's name, and a list will appear of all the programs scheduled in the following week that contain those key words. From this list, you can set up one-touch records or create a Theme-based Replay channel.

17. How does the ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder find the shows the viewer wants to see?
Every ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder contains the latest and most accurate information about all the TV shows that are being broadcast over the air or on your cable or satellite service. Using sophisticated search software, the ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder searches this database of programming information to locate the shows the you asked for. For example, let's say you asked the ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder to create a Drama Movies Replay channel. The ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder will constantly scan the continuously updated Channel Guide information, searching for references to Drama. The ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder will automatically configure itself to record any Drama movie it finds, so you can watch it on-demand.

18. How do you play the shows the ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder records?
Use the replay guide. All Show-based, Zone-based, and Theme-based recordings are listed here, ready for viewing on demand.

19. How can a viewer control live TV?
With the Panasonic ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder, you can control live television just like recorded shows. If you are watching your favorite sitcom at its regularly scheduled time and right in the middle of it the telephone rings, you don't have to miss a minute. Simply press PAUSE and take the call. The ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder will pause live TV for up to seven hours. To resume watching the show right where you left off, press PLAY. The ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder will continue to record the live broadcast while you watch what you have missed. You can also rewind and fast forward, up to 20x speed. The QuickSkip button instantly jumps ahead 30 seconds in the broadcast each time it is pressed. instant replay takes you back seven seconds so you can catch the bit of dialog or great sports play you just missed. If you want to catch up with the live broadcast, all you have to do is press RETURN TO LIVE. You can even play a live TV show in slow motion or watch it one frame at a time.

20. Is the ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder difficult to connect to a television*?
No, it's really quite easy. In fact, the ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder features most of the same standard video and audio inputs and outputs as any high-end video recorder. If you can hook up a VCR, you can hook up a Panasonic ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder. The ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder takes approximately 25 minutes to hook up and set up the Channel Guide.

21. How does the ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder interface with satellite and cable boxes?
Through the use of an infrared (IR) blaster. In the case of some satellite receivers it also supports direct serial data interface.

22. What are the limits on repeating events?
The ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder supports an unlimited number of scheduled record events, limited only by the available record space.

23. Does the ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder have the ability to skip forward 30 or 60 seconds?
Yes. The QuickSkip button on the remote control allows the viewer to instantly skip over 30 seconds of unwanted material.

24. Does the ReplayTV service include complete program listing for my geographic area?
The ReplayTV service has complete listings for over 12,000 cables, satellite and terrestrial systems in North America.

25. How many days of future program listings does the ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder contain?
The ReplayTV service provides 7 days of future program schedule information for the ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder.

26. How good is the ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder's video quality?
The ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder uses the MPEG 2 compression system, which allows a range of video quality settings. The ShowStopper® Hard Disk Recorder's compression rates are user-adjustable from the default setting of 2Mbps to 6Mbps. All storage times are calculated based on the default settings. At 2 Mbps (extended mode), the picture quality is equivalent or better than a VHS tape. At 4Mbps (Medium mode), the quality is equivalent or better than a SVHS tape. Above 4Mbps (high mode), the quality approaches the level of a DVD.
